S Jaishankar to Visit US from December 24-29 for Key Bilateral Talks
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit the US to strengthen India-US ties and discuss critical bilateral, regional, and global matters
23-12-2024External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is set to visit the United States from December 24 to 29, marking the first high-level Indian official visit to the US following Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential elections. The trip aims to deepen India-US ties and discuss key bilateral, regional, and global issues.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Jaishankar will meet with his US counterparts to explore opportunities for collaboration across various sectors and address pressing global challenges. "He will be meeting counterparts to discuss key bilateral, regional, and global issues," the MEA said in a statement.
As part of his visit, the minister will also chair a conference of Indian Consul Generals in Washington to deliberate on consular matters and strengthen diplomatic outreach.
The visit comes amidst a changing political landscape in the US. In September, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti highlighted the robust India-US relationship, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “the most pro-American prime minister in Indian history” and outgoing US President Joe Biden as “the most pro-Indian president we’ve had in US history.”
After Donald Trump’s election victory in November, Prime Minister Modi congratulated him over the phone, with Trump reportedly calling India “a magnificent country” and referring to Modi and India as “true friends.” Trump is set to assume office in January.
The visit also coincides with allegations of bribery and fraud against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani and several associates. US authorities have indicted Adani, his nephew Sagar Adani, and executives from Adani Green Energy Ltd and Azure Power Global Ltd for allegedly orchestrating a multibillion-dollar fraud scheme to secure solar energy contracts.
The US Department of Justice has charged the group with conspiracy, securities fraud, and wire fraud, alleging that they misled US investors and global financial institutions to secure funding. The Adani Group has denied the accusations, calling them "baseless."
This visit by Jaishankar is seen as an opportunity to reinforce the strong India-US partnership and navigate ongoing challenges, including geopolitical tensions and financial controversies.
