The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in Kerala unanimously selected V.D. Satheesan as its leader during a meeting convened at the Assembly complex in Thiruvananthapuram. The proposal was introduced by Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph and supported by veteran leader Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan.
Although senior Congress figure Ramesh Chennithala was not physically present at the gathering, he conveyed his backing for Satheesan through a written message, according to reports.
The CLP’s decision followed the All India Congress Committee’s official declaration naming Satheesan as the chief ministerial face after the United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a commanding mandate in the Kerala Assembly elections. The alliance clinched 102 out of 140 seats, bringing an end to a decade-long Left-led administration.
Addressing the media after his appointment, Satheesan expressed gratitude to the party leadership and described the role as a profound responsibility entrusted by the people of Kerala. He pledged that the promises made during the campaign would be implemented step by step.
He emphasized that the incoming administration would prioritize raising living standards and ushering in what he called a “new era” for the state. Satheesan also acknowledged the support of senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and K.C. Venugopal, as well as Chennithala, stating that their guidance would continue to be valued in the days ahead. Both Venugopal and Chennithala had been viewed as potential contenders for the top post.
Calling the chief minister’s role a blessing rather than a personal triumph, Satheesan credited party workers and alliance partners for the victory. He urged cooperation from all sections of society, including opposition members, to collectively work toward rebuilding and strengthening the state.
On questions surrounding the time taken to announce the chief ministerial nominee, Satheesan clarified that the party followed a consultative approach involving MLAs, MPs, and senior leadership before finalizing the decision. He reiterated that the UDF’s success stemmed from teamwork and unity within the alliance.
Regarding cabinet formation, he stated that ministerial appointments would be finalized after further discussions within the party’s senior ranks.
