Satish Kumar has made history as the first Dalit officer appointed as Chairman and CEO of the Indian Railway Board, succeeding Jaya Varma Sinha
28-08-2024Satish Kumar, an esteemed officer from the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS), has been appointed as the new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Railway Board. This marks a historic achievement as he becomes the first person from the Scheduled Caste or Dalit community to hold this prestigious position.
Kumar's tenure is set to begin on September 1, when he will succeed the outgoing chairperson and CEO, Jaya Varma Sinha, who is retiring on August 31. The Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) confirmed his appointment in an official order approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Kumar is a distinguished officer from the 1986 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME). Over a career spanning more than 34 years, he has made significant contributions to Indian Railways, leading to his recognition by the Railway Board. In November 2022, Kumar took charge as the General Manager of North Central Railway in Prayagraj, marking a significant milestone in his public service journey.
Educationally, Kumar holds a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the renowned Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur. He further pursued a Post Graduate Diploma in Operation Management and Cyber Law from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), enhancing his expertise.
Since beginning his career with Indian Railways in March 1988, Kumar has held various key positions across multiple zones and divisions. His leadership has been instrumental in driving innovation, increasing operational efficiency, and advancing safety measures within the railway network.
