Satyendar Jain Granted Bail After Nearly Two Years in Jail for Money Laundering Case
AAP leader Satyendar Jain has been granted bail by a Delhi court, citing his prolonged incarceration and the lack of progress in the trial
18-10-2024AAP leader and former Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain was granted bail on Friday, following nearly two years in custody related to a money laundering case. The Rouse Avenue Court cited Jain's lengthy incarceration of 18 months, noting that the trial had not yet started.
Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 30, 2022, over allegations of laundering money through four shell companies reportedly linked to him. The court highlighted the importance of individual liberty in cases under strict laws like the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The court's decision heavily referenced the Supreme Court's judgment in Manish Sisodia’s case, which established the right to a speedy trial as a fundamental principle. It concluded that based on this precedent, Jain was entitled to bail, especially since the trial may not begin or conclude anytime soon.
Despite opposition from the ED, the court granted bail, acknowledging the significant time Jain had already spent in custody. He was released on a personal bond of ₹50,000, with conditions that prohibit him from contacting witnesses or influencing the trial. Jain is also restricted from traveling outside India without the court’s permission.
Upon his release, Jain expressed gratitude with the words "Satyamev Jayate" (Truth Alone Triumphs). Reacting to the development, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal praised the bail decision, stating that Jain had been jailed for his work in building mohalla clinics and offering free healthcare to the people of Delhi.
Kejriwal, in a post on X, welcomed Jain’s release and reiterated his stance that Jain was wrongfully imprisoned for improving healthcare in the city. "God is with us," Kejriwal said, celebrating Jain's return.
Jain's release marks the fourth AAP leader to be granted bail in money laundering cases, following Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Sanjay Singh.
