The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea challenging a lower court's order for a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, a Mughal-era mosque, which recently triggered violent clashes resulting in four deaths and several injuries. The Masjid Committee has sought an urgent stay on the survey order and requested a swift hearing before Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna.
Describing the situation as "extraordinary," the petitioners have urged the apex court to take "extraordinary steps" to address the issue. A bench led by the Chief Justice is scheduled to take up the matter tomorrow.
The November 24 violence has sparked widespread political controversy, with the matter reverberating in Parliament today. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned soon after convening as opposition members stormed the well of the House, demanding accountability for the violence and action against those responsible.
In response, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the opposition's actions, stating, "I strongly condemn the attempts by the Congress and its allies to disrupt House proceedings."
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Police conducted a flag march in Sambhal earlier today, ahead of Friday prayers, in an effort to maintain peace and security in the area.
The case and the violence surrounding it continue to draw national attention, with political and legal ramifications expected in the coming days.
