Security agencies in Jammu and Kashmir have been placed on high alert following intelligence reports of a significant threat ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, India Today TV learned on Thursday.
For the first time since the revocation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir will hold Assembly elections, with voting set to take place in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1.
Security efforts are being heavily concentrated in high-risk regions such as Rajouri, Poonch, Kathua, and Doda, where recent terror activities have heightened concerns. This year, Jammu has experienced a surge in terror incidents, resulting in significant losses for security forces.
Sources indicate that the increase in terror activities is part of an attempt by militant groups to destabilize the region ahead of the elections.
Up until August 2024, security forces successfully eliminated 33 terrorists in the region, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace and security. Of those, six were neutralized south of the Pir Panjal Range, underscoring ongoing counterterrorism efforts. Additionally, the Indian Army has reinforced its presence in Jammu by deploying a brigade-level force to safeguard the area as the elections approach. Security forces remain vigilant to any potential threats, ensuring the region's stability during this crucial period.
