Congress leader Shashi Tharoor faced severe criticism online after sharing a video of his relief efforts in landslide-hit Wayanad with a caption that many found insensitive. Tharoor, the Thiruvananthapuram MP, posted the video with the caption, "Some memories of a memorable day in Wayanad," which sparked a backlash for its perceived insensitivity.

The video depicted Tharoor unloading relief supplies from a truck, visiting relief camps, and surveying the landslide-affected areas. His use of the word "memorable" drew immediate condemnation, including from BJP leader Amit Malviya, who commented, "Deaths and disaster are memorable for Shashi Tharoor."

The controversy arose in the aftermath of three massive landslides that struck Wayanad's Meppadi, Mundakkai Town, and Chooralmala on July 30, resulting in the deaths of 358 people. The disaster wiped out entire villages, with rescuers continuing to recover bodies and body parts from the debris.

Tharoor's caption led to widespread outrage on social media, with many questioning how such a tragedy could be described as a "memorable" day. One user, Rae, criticized Tharoor, saying, "More than 300 people have lost their lives and this Congress leader close to Rahul Gandhi is saying ‘Memories and Memorable day.'"

Another user, Anurag, wrote, "Meet elite MP Shashi Tharoor. He went to tragedy-hit Wayanad to have a ‘memorable’ day." The sentiment was echoed by others, who accused Tharoor of prioritizing social media posts over genuine relief efforts.

In response to the criticism, Tharoor defended his choice of words, explaining in a follow-up post on X, "For all the trolls: definition of 'memorable': Something that is memorable is worth remembering or likely to be remembered, because it is special or unforgettable. That's all I meant."

Meanwhile, rescue operations in Wayanad were intensified with the use of advanced radars, drones, and heavy machinery to locate survivors and recover bodies. The state government announced plans to build a new township to rehabilitate those displaced by the landslides.
