Shehbaz Sharif Visits Sialkot Cantonment Day After PM Modi’s Airbase Tour Amid Tensions
Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif met army personnel in Sialkot a day after PM Modi visited Adampur airbase amid rising India-Pakistan tensions
15-05-2025A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed military preparedness at Punjab’s Adampur airbase, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a high-profile visit to Pasrur Cantonment near Sialkot on Wednesday. The visit came in the backdrop of heightened hostilities between the two nuclear-armed nations.
Situated roughly 130 km from Lahore, Pasrur Cantonment was among the key sites targeted during India’s Operation Sindoor. Indian forces reportedly struck radar installations and airbases in Sialkot and Pasrur with precision-guided weapons, resulting in significant infrastructure damage.
During his visit, Sharif interacted with army personnel involved in recent military actions and addressed them in a morale-boosting speech, as confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office. Top-ranking officials, including Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir, and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu accompanied him. Key ministers and regional military leaders were also present.
The Pakistani leader is expected to visit other strategic military facilities, including air and naval bases, in the coming days to meet officers of the Pakistan Air Force and Navy.
Sharif’s visit comes on the heels of India’s retaliatory strikes on the nights of May 6 and 7, when Indian forces launched Operation Sindoor to eliminate nine terror training facilities across Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. The strikes were a response to the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, mostly tourists.
Following the Indian offensive, Pakistan responded with attempted strikes on Indian military installations on May 8, 9, and 10, prompting blackouts and air-raid sirens in cities such as Jammu and Amritsar. The swift escalation raised alarms of a potential full-scale conflict.
India responded with further attacks on military locations in Pakistan, including Rafiqui, Murid, Chaklala, Rahim Yar Khan, Sukkur, and Chunian, intensifying the standoff.
While US President Donald Trump announced on May 10 that a ceasefire had been achieved, New Delhi dismissed this, reiterating that any discussion with Islamabad must happen bilaterally.
In his national address after Operation Sindoor, PM Modi delivered a stern message to Pakistan, ruling out any talks under the threat of nuclear intimidation. He declared that India’s engagement with Pakistan would be limited to discussions on terrorism and the return of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
