Shehbaz Sharif Vows to Surpass India, Triggers Social Media Frenzy
Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif’s bold claim about overtaking India sparked humor and skepticism online, highlighting shifting political rhetoric
23-02-2025Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made a bold proclamation during a public gathering on Saturday, asserting that if Pakistan does not surpass India in progress, "then my name is not Shehbaz Sharif."
Sharif emphasized his vision for a self-reliant Pakistan, aiming to reduce dependence on foreign loans and strengthen the country's economic position globally. “We will make Pakistan a great nation and move ahead of India,” he declared, underscoring his commitment to advancing the country's development.
He also claimed that inflation had dropped significantly under his leadership, stating it had fallen from 40% at the time he assumed office to just 2% now. However, he did not provide official data to substantiate this assertion.
Sharif’s remarks quickly became a talking point on social media, with many users responding with humor and skepticism. Several people on X (formerly Twitter) mocked his statement, joking that if he fails, he might need a new name.
One user quipped, “Guess we’ll have to think of a new name for him,” while another sarcastically commented, “Didn’t take his medicine today, lost his mind.” Some even ridiculed Pakistan’s ambitions, suggesting, “Forget Champions Trophy, they should host the Clown Olympics—it’ll be an instant hit.”
Sharif’s competitive stance comes just weeks after he advocated for peaceful dialogue with India. Earlier this month, during a special session of the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) Legislative Assembly on "Kashmir Solidarity Day," he expressed Pakistan’s willingness to resolve disputes, including Kashmir, through diplomatic talks.
His latest statement, however, signals a shift in tone, possibly reflecting the challenges Pakistan faces on the economic and political front.
