Sheikh Hasina to Remain in India Pending UK Asylum Decision: Report
India has provided former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with an interim stay while she seeks asylum in the UK following the collapse of her government
06-08-2024India has granted former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina an interim stay following the collapse of her government on Monday, according to media reports. During her temporary stay in India, the country will provide comprehensive logistical support while Hasina seeks asylum in the UK.
Hasina, who resigned amid severe anti-government protests, is en route to London with her sister Rehana, a UK citizen. The British government has yet to confirm whether Hasina will be granted political asylum.
Rehana, the younger sister of Sheikh Hasina and daughter of Bangladesh's founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is accompanying Hasina as she navigates her asylum process. Rehana's daughter, Tulip Siddiq, is a British MP representing the Labour Party.
The Indian government is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving situation in Bangladesh, where Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman has assumed control and announced the formation of an interim government. In a televised address, General Waqar-uz-Zaman called for cooperation as the army takes over responsibility for law and order amidst ongoing violence.
Over the past two days, protests against Hasina's government have resulted in more than 100 fatalities.
