Smriti Irani Reflects on Amethi Defeat, Emphasizes Development Achievements
Despite her defeat in Amethi, Smriti Irani remains focused on the progress made in the constituency, emphasizing her commitment to its development
29-08-2024BJP leader Smriti Irani has reflected on her political journey in Amethi, describing it as both an "emotive and ideological issue." Despite her significant defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to Kishori Lal Sharma, a loyalist of the Gandhi family, Irani remains undeterred by the loss. Irani had gained national recognition for defeating Rahul Gandhi in 2019, but in 2024, she faced a crushing defeat, losing by over 1.6 lakh votes.
Addressing her defeat in a podcast, Irani expressed that elections come and go, and while she may have lost the battle for Amethi, her real victory lies in the development work she initiated there. She highlighted that under her efforts, over one lakh families now have homes, 80,000 homes are connected to electricity, and two lakh families received gas cylinders for the first time.
Irani emphasized her commitment to Amethi, noting that she has made sure the constituency was not neglected, unlike the allegations faced by previous MPs. She even bought a home in the area to stay connected with the people. Recalling her 2014 entry into the political arena of Amethi, she shared how she accepted the challenge after receiving a late-night call from Rajnath Singh, then BJP president, asking her to contest the seat.
Irani cited her development achievements in the constituency, including constructing roads in 40 villages, building homes for one lakh families, and connecting four lakh people to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme. She mentioned these as evidence of her dedication to improving the lives of Amethi's residents over the last five years.
When questioned about speculation that she might be the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate for Delhi, Irani responded vaguely, emphasizing her dedication to serving the people. She highlighted her experience as an MP and her leadership roles within the BJP but did not confirm or deny the possibility.
Irani’s comments are seen as a subtle critique of Rahul Gandhi, who won Amethi for three consecutive terms before his 2019 defeat.
