Starbucks Appoints Brian Niccol as CEO with a $113 Million Compensation Package
Brian Niccol, former Chipotle leader, steps in as Starbucks' new CEO, with a substantial $113 million compensation package
16-08-2024Starbucks has made waves by announcing Brian Niccol as its new CEO, succeeding Laxman Narasimhan, who resigned after just 17 months in the role. The compensation package offered to Niccol has drawn significant attention, reflecting the company's confidence in his leadership abilities.
Niccol's compensation package is impressive, totaling around $113 million. This includes a $10 million sign-on bonus, a $75 million equity grant, and an additional equity grant starting in fiscal year 2025 that could be valued at $23 million annually. Alongside these incentives, Niccol will receive an annual salary of $1.6 million and a performance-based cash bonus ranging between $3.6 million and $7.2 million.
In an official filing with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, Starbucks outlined the details of Niccol’s compensation, noting that his base salary will start at $1.6 million per year, with an annual cash incentive tied to a target of 225% of his base salary, and a maximum of 450%. The equity awards, beginning in fiscal year 2025, will target a value of $23 million.
Interestingly, Niccol will not be required to relocate to Seattle, Starbucks' headquarters. Instead, he will commute from his current home, with Starbucks covering costs for temporary housing and providing a personal chauffeur during his stays in Seattle. Moreover, the company will set up a remote office for Niccol in Newport Beach, where he can work when not in Seattle. He will also have access to the company's executive physical program and use of the company plane for travel between his home, remote office, and headquarters.
A Starbucks spokesperson praised Niccol's track record, stating, "Brian Niccol has consistently delivered strong financial returns over the years. His compensation at Starbucks is closely tied to the company's performance and the shared success of all stakeholders. We believe in his ability to generate long-term value for our partners, customers, and shareholders."
Niccol's compensation is not just an incentive for his new role but also compensates for the pay he is leaving behind at Chipotle. At Chipotle, Niccol was credited with an 800% increase in the stock price and a nearly sevenfold rise in profits. Starbucks' board is optimistic that Niccol can replicate this success as he takes on the challenges facing the company.
Niccol steps into his new role following the departure of Laxman Narasimhan, whose short tenure saw a significant decline in Starbucks' fortunes, including a 23.9% drop in share price and a loss of Rs 32 billion in market capitalization.
