Stay Vigilant, Remain Calm: PM Modi Urges Caution After Earthquake Shakes Delhi-NCR
Early morning tremors rattled Delhi and NCR, sending residents fleeing as a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck with its epicenter near Dhaula Kuan
17-02-2025Residents of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) were jolted awake by strong tremors early Monday morning as a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck the area. The epicenter was identified near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in south Delhi's Dhaula Kuan, according to an official cited by news agency ANI.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the quake occurred at a shallow depth of five kilometers at 5:36 am. Witnesses described hearing a loud rumbling noise when the tremors hit, which experts attributed to the shallow depth and tectonic activity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi promptly addressed the situation on social media, urging residents to remain calm and adhere to safety protocols. "Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation," he posted on X.
Panic swept through neighborhoods as residents fled their homes and high-rise buildings, seeking safety. Some described the shaking as unusually strong despite the moderate magnitude. A resident from Ghaziabad shared their experience, stating, "Tremors were so strong. I have never felt like this ever before. The entire building was shaking."
At New Delhi Railway Station, a vendor recounted that customers began screaming as objects trembled. Another passenger compared the sensation to a train passing underground, noting the intense vibrations.
Videos depicting fearful residents and swaying household items rapidly circulated on social media, highlighting the community's alarm. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or structural damage.
Delhi Police reassured citizens through a social media post, writing, "We hope you all are safe, Delhi! For any emergency help, dial 112."
POLITICAL LEADERS EXPRESS CONCERN
Several political figures acknowledged the earthquake and conveyed their support. BJP leader Tajinder Singh Bagga took to social media with a brief question, "Earthquake?" while Congress leader Alka Lamba shared a similar reaction.
Delhi’s caretaker Chief Minister Atishi extended her prayers for the safety of residents, tweeting, "A strong earthquake just struck Delhi. I pray for everyone’s safety." Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal echoed her message, emphasizing his concern for the public's well-being.
Experts stressed that Delhi-NCR is situated in Seismic Zone IV, making it susceptible to moderate to severe earthquakes. The Dhaula Kuan area, located near a lake, has previously experienced low-intensity seismic activity, including a 3.3 magnitude quake in 2015.
Authorities remain vigilant as residents brace for potential aftershocks, underscoring the need for preparedness in a region prone to seismic disturbances.
