The high-stakes inheritance dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s ₹30,000-crore fortune took a dramatic turn in the Delhi High Court on Tuesday, as fiery exchanges unfolded between lawyers representing Karisma Kapoor’s children and Kapur’s widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur.
Representing Samaira (20) and Kiaan Kapoor (15), senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani launched a sharp attack on Priya Sachdev, likening her to “Cinderella’s stepmother” and accusing her of greed and manipulation. He alleged that Priya hurriedly tried to restrict the children’s inheritance, while claiming 60% of Sunjay’s assets for herself and assigning only 12% to her son.
“She’s acting out of sheer greed. She’s cornered the lion’s share of the estate and is now trying to shut out the rightful heirs,” Jethmalani argued before the bench.
The petition, filed by Sunjay’s children, seeks to freeze all transfers and third-party rights over their late father’s assets, claiming that the will produced by Priya was “forged and fabricated.”
Alleged Forgery and Suspicious Circumstances
Jethmalani described the document as a “clumsy forgery”, asserting that no reputed lawyer would have drafted such a will for an industrialist of Sunjay Kapur’s stature. He said it was implausible that Kapur would sign a document of such magnitude without legal counsel.
He also pointed to inconsistencies — noting that the will was supposedly modified in March 2025, a time when Sunjay was reportedly on vacation with his son Kiaan, and later cut short his trip due to his mother’s illness.
“If Sunjay was away during that period, who amended the will? The file was stored on another device — one later linked to a person who became a director in his company,” Jethmalani alleged, hinting at a larger conspiracy.
The lawyer further claimed that those behind the forgery were “rewarded” with positions in Kapur’s firms, specifically naming Nitin Sharma, a close aide of Priya Sachdev.
Family Rift Over Assets
Priya Sachdev’s legal team countered the allegations, claiming that Samaira and Kiaan had already received ₹1,900 crore from the RK Family Trust, established by Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur. “What more do they want?” her counsel, Rajiv Nayar, asked the court.
However, Jethmalani insisted that no part of Sunjay’s personal wealth had been allocated to the children and that the will fails to explain their disinheritance. He also revealed that even Rani Kapur had been left out, despite being Sunjay’s mother.
“She has been given nothing. She wrote several emails to Priya seeking clarity but received no response,” he said.
Background and Next Hearing
Sunjay Kapur, the chairman of Sona Group, died unexpectedly during a polo match in the UK in June 2025. The will, allegedly executed in March 2025, left his entire personal estate to Priya Sachdev Kapur, his third wife.
Karisma Kapoor, Sunjay’s ex-wife, is representing their children in court. The family’s legal team has called for a status quo order on all assets until the authenticity of the will is verified.
The Delhi High Court has scheduled the next hearing for October 13, with both sides directed to submit supporting documents and digital evidence.
