A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court urging the Bihar government to conduct comprehensive structural audits of all existing and under-construction bridges across the state. This move comes in the wake of nine bridge collapses within the past 15 days amidst heavy rainfall.

Advocate Brajesh Singh, the petitioner, has also called for directives to either demolish or retrofit weak bridge structures. The plea emphasized the need for establishing guidelines and policies to ensure real-time monitoring of government construction projects, particularly bridges.

Describing the bridge collapses as "man-made disasters", the petition highlighted the recurrence of such incidents in Bihar, stressing the inadequate attention to the safety of critical infrastructure.

"It is alarming that Bihar, the most flood-prone state in India, continues to witness such incidents despite its vulnerable geographical conditions," the petition stated.

The petitioner underscored the urgency of Supreme Court intervention, warning of potential future incidents due to governmental negligence and alleged corruption involving contractors and agencies.

Following public outcry and opposition criticism, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has convened meetings to instruct the Road Construction Department (RCD) and Rural Works Department (RWD) to promptly assess all old bridges and identify those needing immediate repairs.

The bridge collapses have been reported across various districts including Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran, and Kishanganj, prompting heightened concerns about infrastructure safety in the region.
