The Supreme Court has taken notice of the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, with a three-judge bench, including Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, scheduled to hear the case on Tuesday.

The incident, which occurred on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, involved the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor. The case has sparked nationwide outrage, with doctors across the country holding protests to demand justice.

A petition was submitted to the Supreme Court on Saturday, urging the judiciary to take cognizance of the heinous crime.

The day after the incident, the police arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, who was identified as the prime suspect. However, due to alleged shortcomings in the police investigation, the Calcutta High Court handed the case over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The situation escalated early Thursday morning when a mob stormed RG Kar Hospital, vandalizing the facility, including the emergency department. Despite this, the Kolkata Police confirmed that the seminar room where the crime occurred remained untouched.

The violence has ignited political tensions, with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accusing the Left and BJP of orchestrating the attack, while the Opposition claims that the Trinamool Congress is trying to interfere with the investigation.

So far, police have arrested 32 individuals in connection with the mob attack and have released photos of 76 suspects as the search for the remaining accused continues.
