Maharashtra Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar announced that the 17-year-old boy involved in the fatal accident in Pune will be barred from obtaining a driving licence until he turns 25. This decision comes after the teenager, driving a Porsche, collided with a motorcycle, killing two IT professionals. The incident occurred in Kalyani Nagar, Pune.
The Porsche Taycan involved had not completed its permanent registration due to an unpaid fee of Rs 1,758, pending since March. Bhimanwar stated that the car’s temporary registration will be cancelled and it will not be allowed to register at any Regional Transport Office (RTO) for 12 months, as per the Motor Vehicles (MV) Act.
The luxury vehicle, imported by a Bengaluru-based dealer, had a temporary registration valid from March to September 2024. The dealer had completed the initial temporary registration, but the vehicle was not brought back to the RTO for final registration.
Electric vehicles in Maharashtra are exempt from road tax, and the applicable registration fees for the Porsche were Rs 1,758, covering hypothecation fees, smart card RC fees, and postal charges. The Pune RTO had asked for the fee payment to complete the registration process.
Following the accident, state transport officials highlighted that the car, still under temporary registration, should have only been used for travel to and from the RTO. They have instructed the Pune RTO to file a police complaint for the MV Act violations.
Another senior transport department official confirmed that the Porsche will be impounded for 12 months. The teenager was reportedly driving at over 160 kmph and under the influence of alcohol, without a licence or proper vehicle registration.
The minor will face a juvenile court on Wednesday for driving under the influence. Initially charged with culpable homicide under section 304, he was granted bail within 14 hours due to his age. Police evidence includes a bill from Cosie Bar, showing the minor spent Rs 48,000 there before the accident that killed Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa.
Vishal Agarwal, the boy's father and a real estate developer, was arrested and is scheduled to appear in a Pune court after medical tests. The state government hospital is also set to release the blood report of the teen driver, confirming if he was intoxicated during the accident.
