A 55-year-old doctor was shot and killed late last night at a private nursing home in Delhi's Jaitpur, just weeks after the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

According to staff at Nima Hospital, two teenagers arrived late in the night, one requesting a change of dressing for an injured toe, which had been treated the previous evening. After receiving the treatment, the teenagers asked for a prescription and proceeded to the cabin of Dr. Javed Akhtar, a practitioner of Unani Medicine.

Shortly after, nursing staff members Gajala Parveen and Md Kamil reported hearing a gunshot. They rushed to the cabin and found Dr. Akhtar with a fatal head wound. The teenagers, believed to be around 16 or 17 years old, are now the prime suspects in what police describe as a likely targeted killing. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the hospital to identify the assailants.

This incident occurs less than two months after the horrific rape and murder of a doctor on night duty in Kolkata, which led to nationwide protests by healthcare workers demanding better safety measures. Following those protests, the Supreme Court formed a National Task Force to develop recommendations for improving the safety of medical professionals.

The Delhi shooting has sparked political criticism, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticizing the central government and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena for the deteriorating law and order in the capital. AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj remarked, "Delhi has become the crime capital—gangsters operate freely, with extortion calls, shootings, and daily murders. The Central Government and @LtGovDelhi have failed in their basic duties for Delhi."

Police are continuing to investigate the case.
