Trump Blocks America’s Path to Its First Woman President Once Again
Donald Trump has reclaimed the presidency, defeating Kamala Harris and delaying America’s first woman president once again
06-11-2024The path to America’s first female president has been extended again as Donald Trump claimed a remarkable victory, marking his return to the White House. This election loss for Kamala Harris draws a parallel to the 2016 defeat of Hillary Clinton, as both women fell short in their bids against Trump.
The similarities between the two races are striking. In both 2016 and 2024, polls gave an early advantage to Democratic candidates, yet Trump managed to turn the tide by winning crucial swing states. Unlike 2016, however, where he lost the popular vote by nearly 2.9 million votes, Trump made history this time as the first Republican in two decades to win both the popular vote and a strong majority of the electoral college, projected to surpass 300 votes.
Kamala Harris had planned to address her supporters on election night at Howard University, her alma mater, but canceled her speech as Trump’s lead widened. This mirrored Clinton’s election night in 2016, where her campaign chairman gave a statement calling for patience as votes were counted.
Both Clinton and Harris focused their campaigns on key Democratic themes like healthcare, social justice, and gender equality. Trump, meanwhile, stuck to his "Make America Great Again" messaging, focusing on economic improvement and border security, themes that resonated strongly with working-class and middle-income voters, particularly in the Rust Belt.
Trump’s return to the presidency underscores the state of the two leading U.S. parties. For Democrats, it marks another missed opportunity to break the highest political barrier for women. For Republicans, it solidifies Trump’s enduring influence within the party, showing his strong appeal to voters despite ongoing legal challenges and controversies.
