Trump Extends Support After Ahmedabad Plane Crash That Killed Over 200, Including Ex-Gujarat CM
US President Donald Trump has offered condolences and pledged assistance to India following the deadly Air India crash near Ahmedabad
13-06-2025US President Donald Trump has conveyed his condolences to India in the wake of the devastating Air India plane crash near Ahmedabad and assured all possible support from the United States.
Speaking to reporters, Trump described the incident as a “terrible tragedy” and one of the most catastrophic air disasters in recent memory. “India is a resilient and powerful nation — they’ll manage this, I have no doubt,” he said. “I’ve told them that if there’s anything we can do, we’re ready to be there right away.”
Reflecting on the possible cause, Trump commented, “We looked at the footage — it didn’t seem like an explosion. The plane appeared to be operating normally, but perhaps the engines lost thrust. I shared some insights, though no one really knows what happened yet.”
The accident involved flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London, which went down shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad airport. The aircraft crashed into a government hospital hostel building just five minutes after departure. Over 200 lives were lost, making it the most fatal aviation accident worldwide in the past ten years.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the press following the crash, stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was personally monitoring the situation. “State and central emergency teams were mobilised immediately. Out of the 230 passengers and 12 crew members, there’s only one confirmed survivor — I met the individual myself,” he said.
Shah further explained that the aircraft was carrying approximately 1.25 lakh litres of fuel. “The heat and fuel load made the crash extremely severe. Sadly, the conditions offered no real chance for survival.”
According to Air India, the ill-fated flight carried a total of 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, 1 Canadian, and 7 Portuguese nationals. As of now, over 200 fatalities have been confirmed, with 41 others reported injured.
Among the deceased was former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, BJP state president CR Patil confirmed. “It’s a profound loss for all of us. The entire BJP family mourns his passing,” Patil said while speaking to the media.
