US President Donald Trump presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a personally signed copy of his book, 'Our Journey Together,' during their meeting at the White House on Thursday. The meeting, which focused on trade, security, and strengthening bilateral relations, began with a warm embrace between the two leaders in the Oval Office.
The gifted photobook, a visual chronicle of Trump’s first presidential term, features notable images from key events, including the 'Howdy Modi' rally held in Houston during PM Modi’s 2019 visit to the United States. Trump signed the book with a handwritten message to Modi: “Mr Prime Minister, you are great.”
While flipping through the pages with the Indian Prime Minister, Trump highlighted photographs from the 'Namaste Trump' event in Ahmedabad during his 2020 India visit and a memorable snapshot of himself and First Lady Melania Trump in front of the Taj Mahal.
Addressing the media, Trump welcomed Modi, calling him a “great friend” and emphasizing their longstanding bond. “It is an honour to have Prime Minister Modi here. We have maintained a wonderful relationship over the years,” Trump said.
Despite the camaraderie, Trump underscored the need for addressing trade imbalances, stressing that the US would pursue reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods. “Whatever India charges us, we will charge them the same,” he asserted. However, both leaders expressed optimism about resolving their differences and announced the initiation of new trade negotiations.
Trump revealed that a trade agreement could be finalized by the end of the year, hinting at “some wonderful trade deals” in the pipeline. Senior US officials indicated that India’s recent trade concessions were perceived as a goodwill gesture aimed at reducing tensions.
During the joint press briefing, PM Modi lauded Trump’s commitment to national interest, drawing parallels with his own approach. “One thing I admire about President Trump is his unwavering focus on his nation’s interests. I, too, prioritize India’s national interests above all else,” Modi stated.
The two leaders also committed to enhancing security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, seen as a countermeasure to China’s expanding influence. Trump announced that the US was prepared to supply India with cutting-edge F-35 fighter jets, further strengthening defense ties.
Additionally, they discussed collaborative ventures in advanced technologies, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence and nuclear energy. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across various sectors, signaling a new phase in the India-US partnership.
