Trump Hints at Fresh Iran Peace Talks Soon as Ceasefire Extension Holds
US President Donald Trump has suggested that progress on renewed negotiations with Iran could emerge within days, even as Tehran denies any confirmed plans for talks
23-04-2026US President Donald Trump has indicated that developments regarding a potential second round of diplomatic engagement with Iran could surface as early as Friday. According to a report by The New York Post, sources in Islamabad suggested that discussions between the two sides might resume within the next 36 to 72 hours.
Responding to a query from the publication about the possibility of a breakthrough, Trump replied via text message, saying, “It’s possible!” and signed off with “President DJT.”
However, Iranian media quickly dismissed the suggestion. Tasnim News Agency, which is closely aligned with Tehran’s establishment, stated on social media that no decision had been made to enter talks and accused Trump of making misleading claims.
Trump’s remarks came shortly after he prolonged a temporary ceasefire with Iran, allowing additional time for diplomatic efforts. The previous pause in hostilities expired without any escalation, marking a rare instance in which Washington refrained from setting a strict deadline for Tehran’s next move.
In a social media post, Trump said the decision to delay military action followed requests from Pakistan’s leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. He noted that Iran’s leadership appeared divided and said the extension was intended to give Tehran time to present a unified proposal.
While ordering the continuation of a naval blockade, Trump instructed US forces to remain on alert. He clarified that the ceasefire would remain in effect until Iran submits a concrete proposal addressing US concerns.
Earlier, the US President had signalled he would not prolong the truce and had warned that military strikes could resume if diplomatic progress stalled.
Pakistan welcomed the extension, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressing appreciation for the move. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also acknowledged the decision positively.
Despite conflicting signals over whether talks will proceed, global markets responded optimistically, with stock prices climbing amid hopes that negotiations could help defuse tensions.
