Trump Praises Modi Amidst Tariff Talks, Calls Him a 'Very Smart Man'
US President Donald Trump lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi while discussing trade tariffs, expressing optimism about US-India relations
29-03-2025US President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about ongoing tariff discussions between the United States and India, while also praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a "very smart man."
"Prime Minister Modi was here recently, and we've always shared a strong friendship. India imposes some of the highest tariffs globally—it's tough. But he (Modi) is a very intelligent leader and a great friend of mine. We had excellent discussions, and I believe things will work out well between our two nations," Trump stated.
His remarks follow his recent announcement of a 25% tariff on all imported vehicles entering the US. Set to take effect on April 2, this decision will impact nearly half of the vehicles sold in the country, including those from American brands manufactured abroad.
Trump has repeatedly criticized India's high tariffs, previously bringing up the issue in February while introducing a reciprocal tariff policy. "We will soon implement reciprocal tariffs—if they charge us, we charge them. Whether it's India, China, or any other country, we aim to be fair," he said at the time.
Prime Minister Modi visited Washington, DC, in February, shortly after Trump began his second term as US President. Their bilateral talks focused on strengthening trade relations to foster economic growth, ensure fairness, and promote job creation.
During the visit, both leaders committed to advancing their economic partnership by launching 'Mission 500,' a new target aimed at more than doubling bilateral trade in goods and services to $500 billion by 2030.
