Trump’s Signature to Appear on US Dollar Bills Ahead of America’s 250th Anniversary
US Treasury unveils plan to print new banknotes bearing President Donald Trump’s name, ending a 165-year-old tradition
28-03-2026The United States is set to roll out paper currency carrying President Donald Trump’s signature as part of commemorations marking 250 years of American independence, the Treasury Department confirmed on Thursday.
Under the new plan, all freshly printed US banknotes will feature Trump’s signature — an unprecedented step for a sitting president. The change will also bring an end to a practice that has been in place since 1861, as the signature of the Treasurer of the United States will no longer appear on federal currency.
Officials said the first $100 notes displaying Trump’s signature alongside that of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are scheduled for printing in June, with additional denominations expected to follow gradually.
Bessent described the move as a symbolic tribute tied to what he called economic momentum and the country’s upcoming semiquincentennial celebrations. In a statement issued by the United States Department of the Treasury, he said placing the president’s name on US currency was a historic way to mark both national progress and the milestone anniversary.
US Treasurer Brandon Beach expressed support for the decision, calling it fitting and deserved.
At present, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing continues to circulate notes bearing the signatures of former Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and US Treasurer Lynn Malerba. Malerba’s signature represents the latest chapter in a continuous tradition spanning more than 160 years.
The currency redesign is part of wider anniversary plans. Earlier this month, a federal arts panel approved a commemorative 24-karat gold coin featuring Trump’s likeness, slated for release during July 4 celebrations marking America’s 250th year.
