Trump Signals Openness To Meeting Iranian Leaders As US Delegation Heads To Pakistan
US President says breakthrough in upcoming talks could pave the way for direct engagement with Tehran, even as Iran signals hesitation
20-04-2026US President Donald Trump has indicated that he is prepared for face-to-face discussions with Iran’s top leadership if forthcoming negotiations yield progress, suggesting a potential diplomatic thaw ahead of talks scheduled in Pakistan.
In remarks to The New York Post, Trump said an American team — comprising Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner — is en route to Islamabad for discussions. He noted that the delegation would arrive later in the day local time. This statement came despite his earlier indication that Vance would not be travelling for the talks.
While Washington appears ready to proceed, Tehran has yet to formally confirm its involvement in the next round of negotiations. Iranian state broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting reported that there are currently no plans for Iran to take part in the upcoming discussions. Similarly, Islamic Republic News Agency cited dissatisfaction with what it described as shifting US positions, excessive demands and the continuation of a naval blockade as reasons for holding back.
The uncertainty has raised fresh questions about whether the diplomatic process can move forward.
Addressing concerns about the possibility of the talks falling apart, Trump expressed confidence that both sides would follow through. He suggested there was no indication that either party was acting in bad faith at this stage.
The US President also said he would personally engage with Iranian leaders if circumstances required, emphasising that he had no objection to direct dialogue should it help advance negotiations.
Trump reiterated that Washington’s primary objective remains curbing Iran’s nuclear capabilities. He stated that preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons is the core demand of the United States and framed the issue as straightforward.
At the same time, he remarked that Iran has significant potential if it aligns with international expectations, implying that improved relations could follow compliance.
The proposed talks in Pakistan are viewed as a critical moment in efforts to ease tensions between the two nations, though Tehran’s current stance leaves the outcome uncertain.
