Donald Trump has strongly criticised members of NATO, accusing them of failing to support the United States during the ongoing conflict involving Iran. In a post on Truth Social, he described the alliance as ineffective without American backing and claimed that several countries had chosen to stay away from the confrontation despite benefiting from US-led security efforts.

Trump argued that while the military phase of the conflict had largely concluded, allied nations were unwilling to contribute to stabilising the region—particularly in ensuring the safety of maritime trade through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. He linked rising global oil prices to disruptions in this route and said reopening it would require minimal risk for partner countries.

The US President also expressed frustration that some nations were complaining about energy costs while declining to assist in securing shipping lanes. He warned that Washington would remember the lack of support shown by its allies during the crisis.

Meanwhile, several countries including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan and Canada indicated a willingness to participate in efforts aimed at safeguarding navigation in the Gulf. However, leaders such as Emmanuel Macron stressed that any involvement would depend on de-escalation and adherence to international law, with France making it clear it would not join active military operations under current conditions.

The developments highlight growing divisions among Western allies over how to respond to the escalating tensions in the Middle East and the broader implications for global energy security.
