Just two days after his election victory, President-elect Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reportedly discussing the ongoing situation in Ukraine, according to Reuters. Sources revealed that Trump, who took the call from his Florida resort, advised Putin against intensifying the conflict, highlighting the United States' significant military footprint in Europe.
Putin’s congratulatory message to Trump included a call for renewed US-Russia dialogue and cooperation, expressing hope for a resolution to the war in Ukraine and better diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The conversation, while not officially confirmed by either US or Russian officials, underscores both leaders’ interest in improving relations. Putin, at a public event in Sochi last week, addressed criticism of his outreach, saying, “If world leaders want to restore contact, I’m open to it.” He added that the goal of resolving the crisis in Ukraine is essential and noted Trump’s “courage” during an attempted assassination last July.
Before this exchange, Trump had also connected with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, voicing concerns over the extent of American military and financial aid to Kyiv. Trump, who has pledged to end the war swiftly, did not elaborate on his specific approach.
Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk joined Trump on the call with Zelenskyy, assuring the Ukrainian leader that his Starlink satellite internet service would continue to support Ukraine. Zelenskyy later expressed his appreciation, highlighting the importance of strong US leadership in securing peace.
Trump, who defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 election, will assume office on January 20.
