In a significant departure from its traditional foreign policy stance, the United States, alongside Russia and its allies, voted against a United Nations resolution on Monday that called for Russia's withdrawal from Ukraine and condemned the ongoing war. The resolution, backed by most European nations, was met with opposition from the US and 17 other Moscow-aligned nations, while India chose to abstain.

This marks the first instance since the onset of the Ukraine-Russia conflict that the US has cast a vote in alignment with Russia. Despite this, the resolution was adopted by the UN General Assembly with 93 votes in favor, 18 against, and 65 abstentions.

The resolution reaffirmed Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, expressing concern over the prolonged impact of the Russian invasion, which has continued for three years. It emphasized the need for de-escalation, an end to hostilities, and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

While India, China, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates, and Iran abstained from the vote, European nations stood firmly behind Ukraine, demonstrating their continued support for Kyiv in the face of Russian aggression.

Additionally, the US refrained from voting on its own rival resolution after European nations, led by France, successfully introduced amendments explicitly identifying Russia as the aggressor. The modified US-backed resolution, which also reaffirmed Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence, secured 93 votes in favor, with 73 abstentions and eight votes against. A Russian attempt to amend the resolution by including references to the "root causes" of the conflict was unsuccessful.

However, the vote also indicated a decline in international backing for Ukraine, as previous resolutions had garnered over 140 votes condemning Russia’s invasion and calling for an immediate withdrawal.

At the UN Security Council, where resolutions carry legal weight, the US insisted on voting on its original draft. While European nations attempted to amend it, Russia exercised its veto power to block the changes, leading to the resolution’s adoption in its initial form.

These developments come at a time when US President Donald Trump is shifting his stance on the Ukraine war, further straining relations between him and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The voting patterns at the UN highlight the evolving global dynamics surrounding the conflict and signal a potential shift in the geopolitical landscape.
