Six US Congressmen have called on newly appointed Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate the previous Department of Justice’s (DoJ) decision to indict Adani Group officials, a move they argue was politically motivated and detrimental to US-India relations.
In a letter addressed to Bondi, lawmakers Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Haridopolos, Brandon Gill, William R. Timmons, and Brian Babin criticized the DoJ under the Biden administration for pursuing charges against the Adani Group in a case involving alleged bribery in India. They described the indictment as a “misguided crusade” that risked straining ties with a key geopolitical ally.
The Congressmen questioned the rationale behind prosecuting a case that primarily involved Indian officials and businesses, asserting that the matter should have been left to Indian authorities. They suggested that external political factors may have influenced the decision, given the lack of direct impact on US interests.
"This indictment came at the risk of harming our relationship with India, just as President Trump returns to the Oval Office," the lawmakers stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong economic ties with Indian partners to support America’s economic growth.
They warned that politically driven actions by government agencies could undermine diplomatic efforts and create openings for strategic adversaries like China, which aims to expand its global economic influence through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Calling for transparency, the lawmakers requested a thorough review of the DoJ’s handling of the case and urged Bondi to provide all records related to the matter. They stressed that selective legal actions could discourage foreign investment and hinder economic collaboration between the US and India.
The letter underscored former President Trump’s commitment to strengthening economic and strategic partnerships with India, reaffirming that both nations share a deep mutual respect fostered by their leaders.
