As Durga Puja festivities approach, the United States has called on Bangladesh to safeguard the rights of its minority communities, particularly the Hindu population. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized the importance of protecting minority rights during a daily press briefing, stating, "Of course, we want to see the rights of minorities protected in Bangladesh as is true all around the world." His remarks were in response to concerns about threats to Hindus from certain religious fundamentalists during their largest festival.

This statement comes amid rising violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh, following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Hasina stepped down on August 5 and subsequently fled to India amid escalating pressure from the military and anti-quota protesters. Since her departure, the Hindu minority has reported incidents of vandalism targeting businesses, properties, and temples.

In response to these developments, the interim government, led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus, has pledged to take strict action against anyone attempting to disrupt communal harmony or targeting places of worship during the Durga Puja celebrations.

A UN report indicated that over 600 people, including members of the Hindu community, lost their lives in violent protests that led to the overthrow of the Hasina-led Awami League government. Additionally, India has urged the interim administration in Bangladesh to ensure that religious events for the Hindu community proceed peacefully.
