A segment of road in the Vasant Vihar area of South Delhi will be renamed Jamaica Marg, following a proposal approved by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) during a recent House meeting on Monday.

This stretch, which runs from B-9 Road at Vasant Marg (House No. 7) to B-8 Street (House No. B-8/26), is currently known as Marcus Garvey Marg, in tribute to Jamaica's first national hero and activist, Marcus Mosiah Garvey. The renaming to Jamaica Marg is viewed as a gesture of goodwill between India and Jamaica, aimed at enhancing their bilateral relations and fostering a stronger bond of trust and friendship between the two nations.

The proposal also references the recent renaming of Tower Street in Kingston after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, recognizing the importance of reciprocal gestures between the countries.

In September, the High Commission of Jamaica submitted a letter to both the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the MCD, suggesting the change to Jamaica Marg. The High Commissioner reiterated this proposal in a follow-up email on September 20.

The MEA expressed its agreement, stating that in recognition of the honor given to Indian social reformer Dr. B.R. Ambedkar by Jamaica, the road in Vasant Vihar may indeed be renamed Jamaica Marg.

In addition, the MCD has approved another proposal to name the main road extending from the Bhalaswa flyover to ITI Road, Jahangirpuri, and Harijan Colony as Late Gokul Chand Marg, in tribute to a notable social worker and the leader of Malswa village in the region.
