Agnivesh Agarwal, son of Vedanta Group founder Anil Agarwal, died in the United States following a sudden cardiac arrest. He was 49. Sharing the news on social media, Anil Agarwal described the loss as the most painful moment of his life, saying the grief of losing a child is beyond words and has left the family deeply shaken.
Born on June 3, 1976, in Patna, Agnivesh was the eldest child of Anil Agarwal and Kiran Agarwal. He received his early education at Mayo College in Ajmer before moving to the United States for higher studies.
Unlike many heirs to large business empires, Agnivesh did not immediately step into the family business after completing his education. Instead, he chose to remain abroad for a period, gaining international exposure in areas such as global business practices, finance and corporate governance. This experience later proved valuable when he returned to India and began contributing to various Vedanta Group companies.
According to Anil Agarwal, Agnivesh played a key role in establishing Fujairah Gold and later went on to serve as chairman of Hindustan Zinc. He was also a board member of Talwandi Sabo Power Limited, among the largest private thermal power projects in Punjab.
Known for maintaining a low public profile, Agnivesh largely stayed away from media attention and social platforms. Within the Vedanta Group, however, he was regarded as a thoughtful and forward-looking leader.
Prior to his death, Agnivesh had been recovering from injuries sustained in a skiing accident in the US. He was undergoing treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, and the family believed his condition was improving. However, Anil Agarwal said an unexpected cardiac arrest abruptly ended those hopes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, responding to Anil Agarwal’s post by calling Agnivesh’s death shocking and heartbreaking, and wishing strength and courage to the bereaved family during their time of mourning.
