Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Wednesday in what is being seen as a politically important development amid the changing power dynamics in the state. The meeting took place at Seva Teerth and lasted for around 25 minutes, drawing attention due to Vijay’s rapid political rise and the timing of the interaction shortly after he assumed office.

During the discussion, Vijay submitted a detailed memorandum to the Prime Minister highlighting several concerns linked to Tamil Nadu. Among the issues raised were the ongoing debate over singing Vande Mataram at official functions, the contentious Mekedatu dam project proposed by Karnataka, defence-related investments in the state, and the repeated arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Soon after the meeting, Vijay arrived at Tamil Nadu House in Delhi, where he was welcomed with a ceremonial guard of honour during his first official visit to the national capital since becoming Chief Minister.

On the Vande Mataram issue, Vijay urged the Centre to allow the Tamil Nadu state anthem to be performed before Vande Mataram during official state events. The matter has recently sparked political controversy in Tamil Nadu, with parties debating questions of regional identity and protocol.

The Chief Minister also strongly objected to Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu project, arguing that the initiative should not move forward without the approval of all states involved in the Cauvery water-sharing dispute. Vijay reportedly asked the Prime Minister to direct the Jal Shakti Ministry and related authorities to avoid clearing the project unilaterally.

In another key demand, Vijay sought greater defence and aerospace investments for Tamil Nadu. Referring to ongoing studies linked to DRDO projects such as AMCA and CABS, he requested the Centre to establish the CABS facility in the state, positioning Tamil Nadu as a future defence manufacturing hub.

The issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen detained by Sri Lanka was also raised prominently. According to the memorandum, dozens of fishermen from the state remain jailed in Sri Lanka while hundreds of fishing boats have been seized. Vijay urged the Union government to intervene diplomatically and secure their release.

The Delhi visit comes shortly after Vijay successfully proved his majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly following the electoral breakthrough of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The party emerged as the largest force in the Assembly elections and later formed the government with support from Congress, Left parties and regional allies.

Sources indicated that Vijay is also expected to meet senior national leaders including Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge during his Delhi trip.

The meeting between Vijay and Modi is now being closely watched for its larger political implications, especially as regional and national parties prepare for upcoming electoral battles in southern India.
