Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has filed an appeal against her disqualification from the wrestling final at the Paris Olympics 2024 with the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). The Indian athlete's appeal comes after she was barred from competing in the finals of the women's 50kg category due to a weight discrepancy of just 100 grams. Vinesh, who secured a 5-0 victory in her semi-final bout, made history as the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final.

Sources indicate that Vinesh has requested to be awarded the silver medal. CAS has set a deadline of Thursday, August 8, to deliver its final verdict. Should CAS rule in Vinesh's favor, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be required to award her a joint silver medal.

What is CAS?

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is an independent institution established in 1984 to resolve sports-related disputes through arbitration or mediation. Headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland, CAS also has courts in New York City and Sydney, with temporary courts in Olympic host cities.

CAS operates independently of any sports organization and is governed by the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS). It resolves legal disputes in the sports arena through arbitration, issuing awards that carry the same weight as court judgments. CAS also provides mediation services to facilitate amicable dispute resolution.

Arbitration panels typically consist of three arbitrators—each party selects one, and the third is chosen by the President of the relevant division. In some cases, a sole arbitrator may be appointed. CAS decisions are final in most sports disputes, with limited appeal options to the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland. CAS plays a critical role in the international sports community by offering a specialized forum for resolving sports-related conflicts.

Why Was Vinesh Disqualified?

Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the final of the Paris Olympics 50kg category after weighing in at 50.1kg, 100 grams over the eligibility limit, on the morning of her gold medal bout. This disqualification was a significant disappointment for Indian fans who were hoping for their first gold medal in Paris.

Vinesh's disqualification highlighted the rigorous weight-cutting techniques used in combat sports. Reports revealed that the night before her final bout, Vinesh worked intensely to lose the 2.7kg she had gained after the semi-finals. India's Chief Medical Officer, Dinshaw Pardiwala, explained that Vinesh underwent strenuous training and time in a sauna to shed the weight. Desperate measures included cutting her hair and shortening her vest, but these efforts still left her slightly above the 50kg mark, leading to her disqualification.
