Vinesh Phogat Retires After Disqualification from 2024 Olympics Final

08-08-2024Wrestler Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement on Thursday, a day after being disqualified from the wrestling final at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Vinesh was disqualified from the 50 kg Women's Wrestling Gold medal match for being 100 grams overweight.
In her retirement announcement on X, she wrote in Hindi, "Mother Wrestling won against me, I lost. Forgive me, your dream and my courage have been broken. I don't have any more strength now."
She concluded her message with, "Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024."
Vinesh had secured her spot in the final by winning the semi-final bout with a 5-0 margin, becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympics final. However, her disqualification due to the weight issue led her to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), requesting to be awarded the Silver medal.
The 29-year-old wrestler from Haryana is a three-time Olympian, competing in different weight categories in each game: 48 kg in the 2016 Rio Olympics, 53 kg in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and 50 kg in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Throughout her career, Vinesh has won three Gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2014, 2018, and 2022, each in different weight categories. She made history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win Gold at both the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games in the same year, achieving this feat in 2018. Additionally, she earned two bronze medals at the World Wrestling Championships in 2019 and 2022.
