WhatsApp debuts standalone app for Apple Watch, adds voice notes and call support
WhatsApp’s new Apple Watch app lets users send voice notes, read chats, and receive calls directly from their wrist — no iPhone required
06-11-2025In a major update for Apple users, WhatsApp has officially launched its long-anticipated app for the Apple Watch, allowing users to send, read, and reply to messages — and even record voice notes — straight from their wrist. The app began rolling out worldwide on November 4, marking the first time WhatsApp can be used on the Apple Watch without relying on a paired iPhone.
This release represents a significant milestone in WhatsApp’s efforts to extend its ecosystem beyond smartphones and desktops. Previously, Apple Watch owners could only view message notifications or send limited preset responses. The new standalone app, however, provides a far more complete messaging experience while retaining WhatsApp’s signature end-to-end encryption across all communications.
The smartwatch version brings several of WhatsApp’s familiar tools to a compact, wrist-friendly interface. Users can:
View entire chat threads and recent message history
Send emoji reactions directly from the watch
Record and share voice messages using the built-in microphone
Receive call notifications for WhatsApp voice and video calls
View images and stickers with improved clarity
These additions aim to make on-the-go communication smoother, particularly for users who want quick access to messages without unlocking their phone.
The app is compatible with Apple Watch Series 4 and newer models running watchOS 10 or later. To install it, users must update both their iPhone and WhatsApp to the latest versions.
Once updated, the app can be found and installed through the Watch app on iPhone under the “Available Apps” section. After installation, users can log in to WhatsApp, sync their account, and start receiving messages and calls instantly on their watch.
WhatsApp has reaffirmed that end-to-end encryption remains active across devices, including the Apple Watch. This ensures that only senders and recipients can view their messages or call details, preserving the same level of privacy users expect on phones and desktops.
The new WhatsApp for Apple Watch app is now being rolled out globally through the App Store, and eligible users can begin using it immediately after updating their devices.
