WhatsApp is testing a new feature to help users confirm the authenticity of images shared in chats, with a reverse image search directly within the app. According to WABetaInfo, the feature is being gradually made available to select beta users, who can access it through the options menu while viewing an image. This addition aims to enhance both security and convenience, helping users verify images and curb misinformation.

As digitally manipulated images and fake news spread rapidly, this feature empowers users to verify content. Often, images lack context when they’re circulated widely, making it hard for users to assess their reliability. By enabling in-app image verification, WhatsApp offers a straightforward way to check an image's background and original source, fostering a safer information environment.

How to Use the Feature

To use this tool, users can open an image within a WhatsApp chat, tap the three-dot menu, and select “Search on web.” This action starts a reverse image search that links to related sources and instances where the image has appeared, providing context that can reveal if an image has been edited or misrepresented. This streamlines the verification process, allowing users to assess accuracy without leaving WhatsApp, unlike traditional reverse image searches that require uploading images separately to a search engine.

Privacy and User Control

WhatsApp designed this feature to be optional, ensuring users maintain control. When users choose to search, the image is submitted to Google solely for the reverse search, without being stored or processed by WhatsApp itself. This balances user privacy with the functionality of verifying shared content.

Currently, the image verification feature is available only to select beta testers using the latest WhatsApp beta for Android via Google Play. WhatsApp plans to expand the feature to more users soon, making it easier for everyone to check the authenticity of images within their chats.
