Colleagues and senior members of the legal fraternity came together on Friday to bid farewell to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, recognizing his remarkable contributions and unique qualities during his tenure. Colleagues praised him for his patience, dedication to a healthy lifestyle, advocacy for technology in the judiciary, and calm demeanor while handling sensitive cases.
Justice Hrishikesh Roy, a classmate of Justice Chandrachud, spoke fondly at the event, reminiscing about their time at Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre, where they graduated in 1982 along with Justices SK Kaul and S Ravindra Bhat. Justice Roy noted, “He was my classmate. Four of us entered this field together,” sharing a warm connection with the outgoing Chief Justice.
Justice PS Narasimha also reflected on his experience working with Justice Chandrachud, saying, “I had the chance to appear before him as an advocate and work alongside him as a judge. It was extraordinary.” His words moved Justice Chandrachud, who was seen wiping tears before smiling at his peers.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the incoming Chief Justice, lightened the atmosphere by mentioning Justice Chandrachud’s fondness for samosas, his disciplined lifestyle—including waking up at 4 a.m.—and his reputation for charm and good looks, drawing laughter from the audience. Justice Khanna shared his admiration for Chandrachud’s legacy in modernizing the judiciary through technology and data, adding, “He has left the path easier with his advancements, but difficult because matching his legacy will be challenging.”
In a heartfelt moment, Justice Khanna also shared that several farewell cards from underprivileged children had been sent to Justice Chandrachud’s chamber, a touching testament to the outgoing Chief Justice’s impact beyond the courtroom.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi expressed his appreciation for Justice Chandrachud’s patience and guidance. “You surpass the statute of patience,” he said, recalling instances when the Chief Justice continued listening to arguments late into the afternoon. Singhvi also thanked him for introducing advocates to digital tools like iPads during court proceedings, adding humorously, “Your youthful looks make us all feel old. Maybe you can share that secret!”
Attorney General R Venkatramani shared lighthearted remarks, suggesting everyone should celebrate retirement by dancing, as they do in Brazil. He also reflected on the void Justice Chandrachud’s departure would leave in the court.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta commended the Chief Justice’s fairness and dedication to justice, adding, “We always felt assured that we could present our case openly. His impartiality in justice will be deeply missed.”
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal offered high praise, acknowledging Justice Chandrachud’s inclusivity, especially for marginalized communities, saying, “You have brought justice to communities whose voices were seldom heard in this court. You have left an indelible mark.” He compared Justice Chandrachud’s legacy to that of his father, former Chief Justice YV Chandrachud, both having guided the court through challenging times.
Justice Chandrachud, who began his term as Chief Justice on November 8, 2022, succeeded Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, who held the role briefly from August to November 2022. His farewell marked the end of a tenure defined by patience, modernity, and a strong sense of justice.
