A long-running dispute over a plot of municipal land adjoining former India cricketer Yusuf Pathan’s family home in Vadodara is nearing resolution under a reported Gujarat government arrangement that would give him half the property without charge and require him to pay for the remainder.
The plot, measuring approximately 1,000 square metres in the Tandalja locality, has been at the centre of an administrative and legal battle since 2012. Under the proposed arrangement, Pathan would receive 50% of the land’s value as a concession linked to provisions for distinguished sportspersons, while paying an estimated Rs 10 crore for the other half.
State revenue and municipal authorities are expected to coordinate the transfer. The reported decision follows years of objections over the disposal of public land and proceedings in the Gujarat High Court.
From Security Request to Court Battle
Pathan first approached the authorities in 2012, seeking a 99-year lease of the plot. He cited security concerns arising from his profile as an international cricketer. His brother, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan, also lives in the family home with their parents and other family members.
While municipal-level proposals initially considered allotting the land for residential security purposes, senior state authorities subsequently rejected the move, maintaining that public assets should be disposed of through transparent procedures, including public bidding where applicable.
The dispute resurfaced in 2024, after Pathan won the Berhampur Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal as a Trinamool Congress candidate. The BJP-controlled Vadodara Municipal Corporation issued him a notice over alleged encroachment on the plot, prompting him to challenge the action in the Gujarat High Court.
The court later raised questions about the occupation of municipal land without a completed allotment process or the necessary financial clearances. Pathan’s legal representatives subsequently withdrew the pending appeals unconditionally, opening the way for the authorities to revisit the matter administratively.
The latest reported arrangement would settle the dispute through a combination of a concession for half the land and payment for the balance. Its implementation remains subject to the completion of the relevant government and municipal formalities.
Political Timing Under Scrutiny
The proposed settlement has also attracted attention because of the reported changes in Pathan’s political alignment. Elected to Parliament in 2024 on a Trinamool Congress ticket, he was subsequently reported to be among a group of MPs who broke with the party and moved towards an alliance with the National Democratic Alliance.
The timing has prompted questions about the circumstances surrounding the resolution of a dispute that had remained unresolved for more than a decade. However, the sequence of political and administrative developments does not, on its own, establish a link between Pathan’s political alignment and the proposed land concession.
The stated basis for the arrangement is a government framework intended to recognise the contributions of distinguished sportspersons associated with Gujarat. The precise terms of the settlement and the official transfer documents will be important in determining how the concession is applied.
Pathan’s Cricket Career
Pathan represented India in international cricket, with his last ODI and T20 international appearances coming in March 2012. He also played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League between 2011 and 2017.
The proposed settlement would bring a long-running dispute over the land beside the Pathan family residence closer to closure, following years of municipal objections, legal challenges and questions over the use of public property.
