Zelenskyy Proposes Full Prisoner Swap with Russia to End War
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested a full prisoner exchange with Russia as a step toward resolving the ongoing conflict
24-02-2025Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has put forward a proposal for an all-for-all prisoner exchange with Russia, aiming to bring the ongoing conflict to an end, according to reports from AFP.
"Russia must release Ukrainian prisoners. Ukraine is ready to exchange all for all—this is a fair way to begin," Zelenskyy stated during a summit in Kyiv, marking the third anniversary of the war.
Exchanges of prisoners between the two nations have taken place multiple times since the war broke out in 2022. In October 2024, both sides released 95 prisoners each, with mediation by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Prior to that, a similar swap occurred in September, involving 103 prisoners from each country. According to Ukrainian parliament’s human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets, this was the 58th such exchange since the conflict began.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy praised Ukraine’s "three years of resistance and heroism" in his address. His remarks came a day after he expressed willingness to step down as president if it meant securing NATO membership for Ukraine.
"If there is peace for Ukraine, and if my departure is truly necessary, I am ready. I can trade my position for NATO," Zelenskyy said during a press conference in Kyiv.
Additionally, he called on former US President Donald Trump to provide security assurances against Russian aggression. On the eve of the war’s third anniversary, Zelenskyy revealed that he had discussed a potential exchange of Ukraine’s natural resources for military and security aid with the US.
Tensions between Zelenskyy and Trump have remained high, with Trump recently labeling the Ukrainian leader a "dictator" and urging Ukraine to hold new elections. Zelenskyy, in turn, accused Trump of echoing Russian propaganda.
