Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that he is willing to step down from his position immediately if it ensures Ukraine’s membership in NATO. Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Zelenskyy emphasized that his primary focus is securing peace for his country and that he would not hesitate to relinquish his role if it would facilitate Ukraine’s integration into the alliance.
“If my departure means peace for Ukraine and guarantees our place in NATO, I am prepared to step aside,” he declared, adding that he was open to making this decision without delay if required.
Additionally, Zelenskyy urged former U.S. President Donald Trump to acknowledge Ukraine’s security concerns and provide concrete assurances to bolster its defense against Russia’s ongoing invasion. He stressed the need for the United States to actively support Ukraine rather than merely mediate between Kyiv and Moscow.
“I want Trump to understand our position. Ukraine needs clear security commitments from the United States,” Zelenskyy stated.
As Ukraine approaches the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Zelenskyy hinted at progress in negotiations with the Trump administration regarding U.S. access to Ukraine’s natural resources in exchange for security assistance.
Meanwhile, Trump has previously voiced his desire to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine, highlighting the devastating human toll of the conflict. However, tensions between the two leaders have been evident, with Trump accusing Zelenskyy of initiating the war and Zelenskyy, in turn, criticizing Trump for relying on misinformation.
In a separate development, Zelenskyy dismissed recent discussions between the United States and Russia in Riyadh, where both sides agreed to explore potential peace talks. He made it clear that Ukraine would not accept any negotiations conducted without its direct involvement, asserting that “there will be no talks behind Kyiv’s back.”
