Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee received interim relief on Sunday after the Calcutta High Court stayed the demolition of his Lok Sabha constituency office in Amtala, South 24 Parganas. The court directed all parties to maintain status quo until further orders or the next date of hearing.

The order was passed after Banerjee’s company, Leaps and Bounds, approached the High Court seeking urgent intervention against the demolition drive. The matter was mentioned before the bench of Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury, with the petitioner claiming that the office stood on land for which valid ownership and related documents were available.

The demolition led to a fresh political confrontation in the state, with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) alleging that the action was carried out even though the dispute was already pending before the High Court.

Reacting to the development, Banerjee accused the police of acting in violation of the law. In a post on X, he alleged that despite judicial observations by the Supreme Court and High Courts on bulldozer demolitions, the constituency office had been razed.

He further claimed that videos from the site showed police personnel removing laptops, printers, documents, furniture and other office materials during the operation, and alleged that BJP workers were present at the spot. Banerjee described the incident as an abuse of authority and said the demolition reflected disregard for the judicial process while the matter was under consideration by the High Court.

The latest petition comes after an earlier legal battle involving the same office. Following alleged violence and vandalism after the Assembly election results, the TMC had approached the High Court claiming that the police had failed to take appropriate action. That matter was listed before another bench but was not taken up for hearing.

After hearing the urgent plea on Sunday, the High Court directed that no further demolition activity be carried out at the site and ordered all sides to maintain the existing situation until the next hearing, giving temporary relief to Banerjee in the ongoing dispute.
