Emphasizing the importance of technology, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud shared on Friday how he utilized in-flight internet to work on a judgment during his trip to Brazil for the J20 Summit.

While delivering the verdict on the promotion of Gujarat judicial officers, the CJI explained, "Justice JB Pardiwala, who authored the judgment, sent me the draft while I was on the flight. Using the flight's internet, I then connected virtually with Justices Pardiwala and Manoj Misra to finalize the judgment.”

This effort was made to ensure the timely delivery of the judgment.

In a humorous remark, Justice Pardiwala mentioned that the judgment would always be special to him as it traveled from India to Brazil.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi commented that airlines might use this incident to promote the effectiveness of their in-flight internet services.

The three-judge bench supported the Gujarat High Court's 2023 recommendations for promoting Senior Civil Judges to District Judges based on the merit-cum-seniority principle. This ruling addressed a plea challenging the Gujarat government and the High Court's method of appointing district judges.
