CJI Surya Kant Criticises System Attackers During Hearing on Senior Advocate Plea
Supreme Court pulls up petitioner over conduct and remarks on social media while underscoring that senior designation is a privilege, not a right
15-05-2026The Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant, made pointed observations in the Supreme Court on Friday while hearing a matter related to the conferment of Senior Advocate status on a lawyer. The bench, which also included Joymalya Bagchi, expressed strong disapproval of the petitioner’s conduct, both inside and outside the courtroom.
During the proceedings, the Chief Justice remarked that some unemployed youth take to activism or media platforms and begin criticising institutions without accountability. He used sharp language to caution against what he described as a growing tendency to attack the system from the sidelines.
The court questioned the petitioner’s approach in actively campaigning for the senior designation, noting that such recognition is conferred based on merit and standing at the Bar, not pursued as an entitlement. The bench observed that aggressively lobbying for the title was inappropriate and asked whether the designation had become a mere symbol of prestige.
Expressing concern over the lawyer’s alleged posts on social media, the Chief Justice warned against aligning with individuals who undermine institutions. He further indicated that if the Delhi High Court were to grant the designation in this case, the Supreme Court could examine the matter in light of the petitioner’s professional behaviour.
In the course of the hearing, the bench also raised broader concerns about the authenticity of educational qualifications held by some members of the legal profession. The Chief Justice said the court was contemplating whether agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation should verify law degrees amid doubts about their genuineness. He added that regulatory bodies might be reluctant to act because of internal considerations.
After the court’s observations, the petitioner tendered an apology and requested permission to withdraw his plea. The Supreme Court allowed the withdrawal.
