Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Arrested by CBI in Liquor Policy Case, Legal Battle Ensues
Arvind Kejriwal faces arrest by the CBI over alleged involvement in the liquor policy scandal, prompting legal challenges and procedural debates
26-06-2024Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the CBI in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam, following permission from the Rouse Avenue Court. This development led to Kejriwal withdrawing his Supreme Court petition challenging the Delhi High Court's bail stay in a related money laundering case.
Kejriwal, earlier arrested by the ED on March 21 in the money laundering probe linked to the same scam, is currently held in Tihar Jail. The CBI justified Kejriwal's custody to confront him with crucial documents, claiming he implicated former minister Manish Sisodia in the privatization proposal.
According to the CBI, Kejriwal alleged that AAP's former communication-in-charge Vijay Nair worked under Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj, suggesting his involvement in various affairs despite not holding a ministry.
Kejriwal's lawyer Vikram Chaudhari objected to the CBI's procedural move, arguing lack of prior notification and requesting time to respond. The CBI defended its actions, asserting investigative prerogative and legal mandate, citing similar precedents.
In response, Kejriwal's counsel highlighted procedural lapses, including the absence of a Section 41 notice under the CrPC for questioning. The court proceedings underscored a contentious legal standoff over due process and the nature of investigative rights.
