A juvenile court in Pune granted bail to a 17-year-old driver involved in a fatal collision in Koregaon Park. The crash, which occurred early Sunday, resulted in the deaths of a couple riding a two-wheeler.
While specific details of the bail hearing were not disclosed, police officials stated that the court deemed the offense insufficiently serious to deny bail.
The court imposed several conditions on the teenager's release, including working with traffic police for 15 days, undergoing psychiatric evaluation and treatment, writing an essay on the impact of road accidents, seeking rehabilitation at a de-addiction center, studying traffic rules, and assisting accident victims if witnessed in the future.
The minor, son of a prominent builder, crashed a Porsche into a motorbike carrying Anis Dudhiya and Ashwini Costa. Costa died at the scene, while Dudhiya succumbed to injuries at the hospital.
The Yerawada police registered a case against the driver under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Motor Vehicles Act for rash driving and causing death by negligence. An eyewitness alleged that all three occupants of the car were intoxicated, and a video showed the teenager being attacked by a crowd at the accident scene.
Akhilesh Awadhiya, uncle of one of the victims, criticized the bail conditions as inadequate and criticized the Maharashtra Police for their handling of the case. Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar stated that a case was filed against the teen and the pub that served him alcohol.
The CP also mentioned that the police would appeal against the court's decision and take further action accordingly.
