The West Bengal government has made significant changes in the administration of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital following the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor. This move comes in response to protests led by medical professionals who have been demanding accountability and a safer work environment.

In a reshuffle of key administrative positions, Professor Dr. Suhrita Paul, who was recently appointed as the principal of RG Kar Medical College after her predecessor Dr. Sandip Ghosh stepped down, has now been removed from the role. Dr. Paul has been transferred to Barasat Government Medical College and Hospital, a position previously held by Professor Dr. Manas Kumar Bandopadhyay, who is now the new principal of RG Kar Medical College.

Additionally, the medical superintendent of RG Kar, Professor Dr. Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, has been replaced by Professor Dr. Saptarshi Chatterjee. Another change includes the removal of Professor Dr. Arunabha Dutta Chaudhuri, who headed the department of chest medicine where the victim, a postgraduate trainee, was working.

These administrative changes were made after students and senior doctors organized a protest march from the CBI office in Kolkata to Swasthya Bhawan, the headquarters of the state health department. The protesting medics met with top health officials and demanded immediate action, including the removal of key figures in the hospital's leadership.

Earlier, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, was appointed as the head of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital. However, this appointment was strongly criticized by the courts, which forced the state government to retract the decision, causing further embarrassment.

The horrifying incident, which took place on the night of August 9, sparked outrage across the country. The doctor, who was on night duty, was found dead in the seminar hall of the hospital the next morning. A subsequent medical examination confirmed she had been raped, igniting nationwide protests and calls for better safety measures for healthcare professionals.

The Supreme Court has since intervened in the matter and set up a National Task Force to recommend measures for ensuring the safety of doctors and other healthcare workers. The investigation into the case was taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the Calcutta High Court criticized Kolkata Police for their lack of progress.

So far, only one suspect, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, has been arrested by the Kolkata Police. The CBI has submitted a status report on the investigation to the Supreme Court ahead of today's hearing, but no additional arrests have been made. The case continues to draw significant public attention, with demands for justice and increased safety measures for medical professionals remaining at the forefront of the national discourse.
