The Cabinet Committee on Security convened at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence this evening amid the escalating crisis in Bangladesh. The meeting comes in the wake of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's departure from Bangladesh, following massive protests over job quotas that have resulted in significant unrest.

Prime Minister Modi was briefed on the situation by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, also engaged in discussions with Jaishankar about the crisis.

Sheikh Hasina, who has been in power since 2009, faced severe protests starting in early July over a controversial quota system for government jobs. The unrest culminated on Sunday with nearly 100 deaths, prompting Hasina to flee the country.

Bangladesh's army chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, announced on state television that Hasina had resigned and that a caretaker government would be established. Hasina’s plane, a Bangladesh Air Force C-130, landed at an airbase near Delhi on Monday evening, where National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met with her.

Sources indicate that Hasina is expected to travel to London, where she might seek political asylum. Her son, Sajeeb Wajed Joy, has suggested to the BBC that she may not return to politics, citing her disillusionment with the strong public opposition to her government despite her efforts to reform the country.

The protests began over a quota system that allocated more than half of all government jobs to specific groups. Although the scheme was reduced by Bangladesh's Supreme Court, the violence continued. Sunday's clashes, the deadliest day of unrest, resulted in at least 94 fatalities, raising the total death toll since July to at least 356, according to AFP.

Bangladesh has a history of political upheavals, including a military-backed caretaker government installed during a period of political turmoil in 2007.
